Chilean Green Corridors Network Project

Published — August 29, 2022

Establishing green corridors between ports where vessels can access, and bunker low-carbon fuels is an essential step to decarbonize the shipping industry. The abundance of solar and wind capacities in Chile are ideal for the generation of these alternative fuels at a low cost, thereby having the potential to play an important role in the global decarbonization of shipping. Chilean Green Corridors are therefore central to realizing Chile’s potential as a key export nation for low-carbon fuels.

Project Objective

The overall objective of the project is to deliver a Pre-Feasibility Assessment of green corridors in Chile. The assessment has to include both domestic and international corridors.

A staged approach will be taken with Phase 1 being Prefeasibility, where identifying and shortlisting routes will build the foundation for the subsequent analyses in Phases 2 and 3. In Phase 2 feasibility analysis will be performed and then the technical, regulatory and commercial feasibility of the shortlisted routes will lead to Phase 3, namely Deployment which investigates the implementation of selected corridors in several stages. Additionally, it should be noted that the Project executes its assessment under the 10 Principles of the UN Global Compact. Consequently, possible green shipping corridors, which from a pure data and business perspective may look promising, will not be recommended if they compromise the forementioned principles.

The first phase focuses on establishing methodology on data collection and analysis to identify potential Green Corridors in Chile. Moreover, map routes, vessel types, fuels, operators and cargo owners to are considered to determine potential domestic and international green corridors. By deploying the Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping Approach for Green Corridors Network and the Corridor Selection Criteria as agreed between the Ministries of Energy, Transportation & Foreign Affairs and the Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping, seventeen distinct corridors have been identified and described. Half of the corridors are related to shipping activities in Chile whereas the other half is related to activities internationally.

From this pre-Feasibility Study, it was observed that there are several advanced energy projects in Chile, with most of these projects producing ammonia. However, the majority of these projects are located in areas with only limited energy demand and therefore transportation of the ammonia is needed. Moreover, the lack of e-methanol in the alternative fuel mix is a challenge for corridors including vessels transporting people, such as ferries and cruise ships. Yet fifteen, both domestic and international, promising green corridors have been identified. The next steps include consortium construction within each of the selected corridors, signing of a Memorandum of Understanding, and the subsequent feasibility assessment in Phase 2.

For the second phase, an assessment of the technical, regulatory and commercial feasibility is to be established for shortlisted corridors. This works includes establishing business models that can unlock investments across the value chain. For the final phase, the goal is to realize the deployment of these green corridors between the involved ports and establish zero emission shipping routes.
